What life on the road was really like with Jimmy Buffett in the 70’s

Whenever people talk about Jimmy Buffett, they usually go straight to the late-stage era — the Hawaiian shirts, packed amphitheaters, blenders spinning on the lawn, cruise ships and restaurants everywhere.

I get it. Nobody threw a better summer party. But that wasn’t always what life with Buffet was like. In the 1970s, back when Key West still felt like the edge of the map, the shirts were genuinely crumpled, and the music had this dusty, acoustic edge that nobody else was making. That era is getting some love in a new documentary, *Occupational Hazard: The First Coral Reefers*, which digs into the years before Buffett became an industry unto himself.

SPIN recently premiered a clip from the film featuring Bob “Lip Balm” Liberman, Buffett’s longtime road manager, telling a great story about the band’s legendary harmonica player, Greg “Fingers” Taylor. As the gigs got bigger, the band started staying in nicer hotels, so everyone bought fancy luggage. Fingers? He kept packing his entire tour wardrobe into a white pillowcase. Liberman remembers pulling up to a five-star Ritz-Carlton, with a sharp-dressed bellman waiting at the curb with a luggage cart, only for Fingers to step out and hand him a lumpy pillowcase like it was the most normal thing in the world. That might tell you more about the Coral Reefer Band than any polished retrospective ever could.

These were scruffy, insanely talented bar musicians who came out of the Florida Keys and somehow ended up taking over FM radio. The documentary, narrated by Jeff Bridges, looks back at those early “heavy artillery years” before the stadiums and the giant Buffett machine. You can hear that whole world in Fingers Taylor’s harmonica on songs like “A Pirate Looks at Forty” and “Changes in Latitudes.” That’s the underrated side of Buffett — before the brand, before the empire, when a bunch of friends could wander into Key West and accidentally create the soundtrack to summer.
