‘Laverne & Shirley’ star Cindy Williams dies at 75

“Laverne & Shirley” star Cindy Williams has died at the age of 75.

Williams’ children, Zak and Emily Hudson, released a statement through a family spokeswoman that indicated Williams died Wednesday in Los Angeles following a brief illness, according to The Associated Press.

“The passing of our kind, hilarious mother, Cindy Williams, has brought us insurmountable sadness that could never truly be expressed,” the statement said, according to the AP. “Knowing and loving her has been our joy and privilege. She was one of a kind, beautiful, generous, and possessed a brilliant sense of humor and a glittering spirit that everyone loved.”

Williams starred in the 1973 film “American Graffiti,” directed by George Lucas, but was best known for her roles in “Laverne & Shirley,” a “Happy Days” spinoff that ran on ABC from 1976 to 1983. The iconic sitcom, set in the 1950s, was about two female roommates who worked on the assembly line at Milwaukee’s Shotz Brewery.

Williams played Shirley opposite Penny Marshall’s Laverne. According to the AP, the series’ co-creator was Penny’s brother, Garry Marshall, who died in 2016.

Penny Marshall died in 2018.

Williams also auditioned for the part of Princess Leia in “Star Wars, according to the Los Angeles Times. She lost the role to Carrie Fisher.
