Chenasia I. Campbell, 28, is accused of striking the American Airlines flight attendant several times and knocking her to the ground during Sunday’s flight, WNBC reported.

A complaint filed in the Eastern District of New York claims Campbell followed a flight attendant down the aisle and began arguing with her after no one picked up her garbage, the television station reported. A second attendant attempted to physically separate the woman and the first attendant, according to the criminal complaint.

Campbell returned to the passenger area, but returned to the crew area moments later after getting into an argument with another passenger, WCBS reported.

According to officials, Campbell was yelling obscenities, the television station reported. Campbell then allegedly attacked the flight attendant again, punching her.

“The defendant stated to the victim that the ‘cops aren’t going to do anything to me,’ and then struck the victim with closed fists, causing the two of them to fall to the floor,” the complaint said. “At some point during the altercation, the defendant attempted to pull up or remove the victim’s dress.”

Employees asked the captain to land the plane, but the request was denied, according to WPIX. An off-duty officer with the New York City Police Department, who was traveling on the plane, restrained Campbell for the rest of the flight, the television station reported. She was taken into custody once the plane landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport, according to WPIX.

“This incident underscores how New York City police officers are never truly off-duty, but are always ready to assist -- no matter the time or place -- when public safety is threatened or people need help,” NYPD spokesperson Sgt. Edward Riley said in a statement.

The flight attendant suffered scrapes to the arm and cheek, bruises to the forehead and leg, swollen hands and a strained neck, WABC reported. She was evaluated by medical personnel at the airport but said she did not need to go to the hospital, the television station reported.
