Target drops mask policy for vaccinated customers, employees

Target is no longer requiring fully vaccinated customers and employees to cover their faces while inside stores.

The retailer updated its mask-wearing policy Monday in response to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention easing its guidelines last week for people who are fully vaccinated.

“Target will no longer require fully vaccinated guests and team members to wear face coverings in our stores, except where it’s required by local ordinances,” the retailer said in a statement. “Face coverings will continue to be strongly recommended for guests and team members who are not fully vaccinated and we’ll continue our increased safety and cleaning measures, including social distancing, throughout our stores.”

Target joins other big box retailers including Costco and Walmart in easing its mask wearing policy. Grocery stores Trader Joe’s and Publix also relaxed their mask wearing requirements.

About 37% of the population, or 123 million people, have been fully vaccinated in the U.S., according to the CDC.
