According to KSWB-TV, Cody and Courtney Campbell have been sifting through the wreckage of what’s left of their Santee, California, home, nearly one week after a twin-engine Cessna C340 crashed into it on Oct. 11. The crash killed the plane’s pilot and a UPS driver on the ground, injured two others and ignited blazes that engulfed at least two homes.

The couple confirmed to CNN that they had only finished renovating their home the day before the crash, but fortunately neither one was home when the crash occurred.

According to the network, the Campbells’ home, as well as a neighbor’s, absorbed the brunt of the plane’s impact, while several others were damaged.

“It was move-in ready when we bought it, but we obviously had some cosmetic things that we wanted to try to do to it, so since day one, we were living in it and slowly but surely kind of making it our own home,” Cody Campbell told CNN.

The Campbells, who wed in December, moved into their San Diego-area home just five months before the plane crash leveled it, but their methodical search of the wreckage revealed a small handful of personal treasures that survived the blast, KSWB-TV reported.

“There’s no words to describe why one thing is burned versus something else that makes it out OK,” Courtney Campbell told the TV. station. “There are a couple of items that mean so much to us. To have them is something that we’ll cherish forever.”

Specifically, the couple found Cody Campbell’s wedding ring, a photo and the letter he wrote his bride on their wedding day, KSWB-TV reported.

“This will hopefully be the hardest thing we have to do in our lives, but at the end of it, we’re going to come out of this incredibly strong, to the point where your everyday hiccups and your bumps in the road are going to look like nothing (compared) to this,” Cody Camobell told the TV station.
