Firefighters find woman’s $20,000 prosthetic leg in reservoir

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis firefighters helped find a woman's $20,000 prosthetic leg that she lost during a family boat day on Geist Reservoir.

Firefighters were wrapping up a two-hour training session on the water when the Indiana Department of Natural Resources asked for their help to find the carbon fiber, titanium leg, the Indianapolis Star reported.

“Without hesitation, the crew gathered their dive equipment from the rescue truck and hopped into DNR’s boat,” Battalion Chief Rita L. Reith said. “With help from the owner of the leg, the crew was able to assess a general last known location and begin the search.”

The family was anchored on a pontoon boat when the woman lost her leg.

team of three divers took turns, spending 20 minutes each searching for the leg in zero visibility.

“After an hour, the divers and DNR were about ready to call off the search,” Reith said. “However, on the final pass for the third diver, the leg was located 20 feet down, about 100 yards offshore.”
