Marshfield Fire Protection said firefighters arrived at the Kosan Crisplant around 5 p.m. to find thousands of 20-pound propane tanks exploding into the air from the flames, KY3 reported.

“It was a very dangerous scene,” District Chief Michael Taylor told the Springfield News-Leader.

The tanks were outside the plant. Crews worked to keep the flames from igniting a larger 33,000-gallon storage tank filled with propane, KOZL reported.  It took firefighters about three hours to get the flames under control, KY3 reported. The fire destroyed multiple tractor trailers but was not able to get inside the building.

A person working at the plant was injured and taken to a hospital for evaluation. There were no other injuries.

Investigators are still working to determine the initial cause of the fire but said Friday they believe it to be accidental, the News-Leader reported. State and federal authorities are investigating including the Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration and Homeland Security.
