Dog sucked from North Carolina home by tornado returns home unharmed hours later

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. — Truth is definitely stranger than fiction some days.

Just ask Penny, a Yorkshire terrier sucked from her Ocean Isle Beach home Monday night when an F-3 tornado ripped through the seaside North Carolina town, before killing three and injuring 10 a few miles away in southern Brunswick County.

The beloved family pet belonging to Brittany Memory made her way home a few hours later, shivering and traumatized but otherwise unharmed, WECT reported.

“She just had a little bit of glass stuck to her, and we took her to the vet and everything is okay,” Memory told the TV station about Penny’s “Wizard of Oz”-esque adventure.

Memory credited Penny with saving both her life and her son’s by waking her up just moments before the twister tore through Ocean Isle Beach, ripping homes from foundations and toppling tractor-trailers.

“When I looked, I didn’t have time. If I had waited a second, me and my son would have been out the back door. I didn’t have time to grab Penny,” Memory told WECT.

Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram said during a Tuesday news conference that the area can expect a “long recovery process.”

“It’s something like I have never seen before. A lot of destruction,” Ingram said, according to People magazine.

The tornado lifted Memory’s home, blew all the mirrors off her walls and ripped the linens off her bed, sweeping them right out the back door – with Penny swaddled inside.

“She flew out right here in the back with all my covers,” Memory told the TV station, pointing to the back of her house that now sports a gaping hole. “It ripped the sheets off my bed. She was just bundled up in it.”
