Couple married 85 years honored as ‘America’s oldest, longest-living’

Everyone told them it wouldn’t last.

He was 17 and she was 16 when the young lovers wed in 1935, WOWT reported.

This week Ralph and Dorothy Kohler celebrated their 85th anniversary and were crowned America’s oldest, longest-living married couple.

“You don’t ever think you’d make it,” Ralph said. “We did. That’s the main thing.”

The couple said they complement each other.

“I cooked, and he liked to eat,” Dorothy said.

Ralph agreed.

“Dorothy loves ballroom dancing, and I loved shooting clay targets,” he said. “I joined her with ballroom dancing, and she joined me with trap shooting.”

She even won a trap shooting national championship in 1952, WOWT reported.

They credit their longevity to understanding.

“If we ever had a problem, I agreed to it,” Ralph said. “That’s the best way to get out of them.”
