Couple celebrating anniversary helps officer dragged by stolen truck, police say

WOODBURY, Minn. — Police said a man was arrested after dragging a police officer with a stolen truck that he then crashed into a pole.

The Woodbury Police Department said in a Facebook post that its officers were called to Tamarack Village for a report of a person slumped over in a car. The responding officer was “made aware the vehicle was stolen” and told the driver he was under arrest.

Police said that when the officer tried to remove the suspect, identified as Daniel Joseph Lamers, from the truck, he was “non-compliant” and attempted to drive away, dragging the officer in the process.

John and Jessica Norring told KARE they were in the parking lot of the shopping center before heading to dinner for their anniversary and saw the altercation.

“(Lamers) was slumped over on his steering wheel,” John told KARE. “The officer didn’t have his lights on or anything. He just approached calmly and tapped on the window.”

John said he could hear the officer screaming for the truck to stop.

Police said the truck hit a light pole, and the injured officer was able to take Lamers into custody.

Jessica Norring recorded a video, showing her husband helping the officer detain Lamers.

“There was no question that we needed to go help him,” Jessica told KARE. “It was such a whirlwind, it happened so fast, but it’s like a movie playing back in your head in slow motion.”

Police said the officer was treated and released from a hospital. In the Facebook post, police offered their thanks to the couple for their “courageous action of coming to the aid of our officer during this dangerous situation.”

Jessica told KARE the couple was happy to help, saying, “You just never know where you will be and what you can do to help people around you.”
