22 riders stranded when roller coaster stalls at Phoenix amusement park

PHOENIX — Firefighters rescued 22 people stranded on a roller coaster Saturday at a Phoenix amusement park.

Phoenix fire department said the Desert Storm roller coaster stalled around 6 p.m. at Castles N’ Coasters, leaving the passengers suspended mid-air about 20 feet above the ground, KPHO reported.

It took rescuers about 90 minutes to safely remove everyone from the coaster. Firefighters set up a high-angle belay system, with each person fitted into a special harness before they were lowered to the ground, KPHO reported. There were no injuries.

The cause of the ride’s malfunction is unclear.
