Local government notes: sustainability forum in Athens, Commission session in Elberton

Norcross tackles street racing

A virtual town hall on sustainability in Athens streams live at 6:30 on the Athens-Clarke County government’s YouTube channel. This evening’s forum is the first of five that are scheduled to take place this month.

There is a new member of the Oconee County Planning Commission. Matt Elder was appointed at this week’s County Commission meeting in Watkinsville. Elder takes over for Brian Rosen, who resigned earlier this year.

Elbert County Commissioners will meet for an afternoon work session: it is underway at 5 o’clock at the County Government Complex in Elberton.

Another Georgia city is tackling the problem of street racing. The City Council in Norcross has passed a measure that stiffens fines -- and could mean up to six months in jail -- for organizers, drivers, and spectators. Street racing is growing concern in much of metro Atlanta, becoming increasingly problematic during the coronavirus pandemic.
